Welcome to Women’s Health at The Claremont Colleges Student Health Services. A variety of services are offered for your health in the area of gynecology. The following are guidelines and procedures to help you utilize our services more effectively. If you have questions and concerns, please schedule a consultation with one of our health care providers.

How and When to Schedule a Gynecological Exam
An annual pelvic exam including Pap Smear and breast exam, is recommended for all women starting by age 21 or within 3 years after first sexual intercourse. This service is provided by "appointment only". You should schedule an appointment with a provider at a time when you will not be menstruating, and re-schedule if your period should start. Appointments should be made two weeks in advance, as there is a demand for this service. At least 48 hours before your Pap appointment, do not douche, have sexual intercourse, or use tampons, vaginal gels or creams. The cost for a gynecological exam with a liquid-based pap smear (Sure Path) is $75.00. If the pap smear result is abnormal, HPV (human papilloma virus) testing will be performed.

Emergency Contraception (Plan B)
The “morning after pill”, Levonorgestrel, is available as an emergency measure after unprotected intercourse. It must be administered within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse and is about 75% effective. A consistent, effective method of birth control needs to follow. Plan B, is now FDA approved for over the counter dispensing for women 17 years of age and older. At a cost of $20.00 Plan B is also now available at Student Health Service, no appointment is required. Patients under the age of 17 are required to see a hea;th care provider. Please schdule an appointment accordingly. The website, not-2-late.com has information about which local pharmacies provide this service by entering a zip code. In addition, you can log on to National Institutes of Health (NIH) for more information.

Birth Control Information
Many methods of contraception are available at the Student Health Service including birth control pills, Nuvaring, Depo-Provera, and the diaphragm. If you are interested in birth control, you are encouraged to discuss the options with a provider at the Student Health Service. Community referrals can be made for students requesting methods not available at SHS.

NOTE: Depo-Provera is started during the first 5 days of your period and requires strict adherence to a timetable.

If you have had the pill or other hormonal contraception prescribed at another clinic and wish to obtain more through the Student Health Service, your Student Health Service provider may ask you to provide a copy of your current Pap report and gynecological exam done within the last year. A Medical Records Release form is available at the Reception Desk of the Student Health Service. The results may be sent or faxed to (909) 621-8472.

Infections and Other Problems
If you believe you have a vaginal infection or other gynecological problem, an appointment is advised. Urgent concerns, however, may be evaluated on a walk-in basis. Come to SHS and be prepared to wait while you are worked into a clinician’s schedule. A walk-in appointment costs $10.00.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing
STI and HIV testing as well as testing for urinary tract infections are available along with many other lab tests. Educational material on Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Herpes, Hepatitis A, B, and C, Syphilis and HIV is available at HEO or in Consultation with a SHS healthecare provieder.

Pregnancy Testing

  1. Timing must be four weeks from the first day of your last menstrual period or two weeks from last unprotected intercourse.
  2. If the test is negative and you do not have a normal menstrual period in the following two weeks, the test should be repeated.
  3. There is a $10.00 charge for the urine pregnancy test. A blood test is available for $25.00. Timing for this test must be done at least two weeks after the last unprotected intercourse. No test is 100% accurate!
  4. Please schedule an appointment for pregnancy testing and counseling.

Condoms/contraceptive foam/ spermicidal jelly
These products are available over the counter without a prescription. Latex condoms are recommended as a method of prevention against sexually transmitted infections. When used alone, they do not constitute the most effective form of contraception; if you use condoms for contraception, they should be used in conjunction with foam, spermicidal jelly or vaginal contraceptive film. NOTE: The CDC warns that Nonoxynol-9 may increase the risk of HIV transmission.

If you have had an annual exam done sometime within the past year, you can fax the results of that exam to us at (909) 621-8472. This will save you the time and expense of having it done again at SHS.

HPV Vaccine (Gardasil): Gardasil is the first vaccine developed to prevent cervical cancer, precancerous genital lesions and genital warts due to HPV (human papilloma virus). This vaccine is recommended for females 9-26 years of age. It is given in a series of three injections over a six month period. Gardasil is now available at SHS at $150 per injection. Schedule an appointment to see a healthcare provider at Student Health Service to discuss and begin your Gardasil vaccine.
