Student Health Service Frequently Asked Questions I need to see someone at the Student Health Service what should I do? SHS sees students by appointment and non-appointment (walk-in service). It is best to call 621-8222 to get an appointment if possible. People who walk in without an appointment are seen between 8:30 -10:30 a.m. and 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. If you walk-in you may have to wait a significant amount of time depending how busy it is and there is a $10 fee. Often you can get an appointment for the same day if you call early. How much does it cost for a visit? All The Claremont Colleges fund SHS so there is no charge for an appointment if made in advance. This funding does not cover laboratory, x-rays or physicals (sports, study abroad, women's annual exam, etc.) If these services are necessary, you are responsible for the charges. Costs for these services are kept as low as possible and are a fraction of what a community medical office would charge. I have insurance through the policy that is sold through the school or I am covered under my family's health insurance policy. Does it pay for these charges? Your insurance may cover these charges. SHS is not able to bill your insurance company directly. You are responsible for the charges and submitting the bill to your insurance company to get reimbursed directly. The other option is to get your lab tests and medicines at an outside facility that is able to bill your insurance company directly. A prescription can be written that you can take to an outside pharmacy. You will have to contact your insurance company about this. How can I pay the bill? I don't have any money with me right now. SHS accepts checks or cash for payment of bills. The office does not accept credit cards. You have 30 days from the date of service or the end of the semester, whichever comes first, to pay your bill. If your bill is not paid by that time, it is sent to your student account along with an additional $7 processing fee for each bill left unpaid. It will show up on your student account as a charge from the Student Health Service- it will not state exactly what the charge was for. That information is kept confidential. Can someone else (parents, deans, etc.) find out the reason I was seen at SHS? No, they cannot. Your records are strictly confidential. In order for us to talk about your medical condition to an outside party, you would have to give us your consent. You must sign a written release to allow someone access to your written medical records. The only exceptions occur if you are a minor (although matters relating to reproductive and sexual health are still confidential) or if you are felt to be a danger to yourself or others. Please ask if you have questions.
