VOLUNTARY DISABILITY /SHORT-TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE (VDI):

The Short Term Disability Insurance Program of the Claremont Colleges is designed to provide partial compensation for wages lost if you become disabled by any non-industrial physical or mental illness or injury which prevents the performance of regular work.

Employees covered under the Plan shall make contributions to the Plan in an amount not in excess of that which would otherwise be required by Sections 984 and 985 of the California Unemployment Insurance Code.

VDI Benefits begin (with which ever comes first):

The sixth day of disability, or

The first full day of hospitalization, or

The first day of treatment in a hospital surgical unit (out-patient) requiring a say of less than 24 hours provided you are disabled at least six (6) days during the disability as a result of such treatment.

If the disability period last for more than 14 days, any waiting period previously charged will be waived. An authorized physician must substantiate your disability.

The Colleges’ allow employees to use accumulated sick leave and/or vacation to supplement Disability benefits, thus continuing income equivalent to full pay.

Eligibility – All employees are covered by the plan on the effective date of hire unless coverage is reflected in writing. If you do not wish to participate in the voluntary disability programs, you must participate in the State program.

In order to receive your disability benefits, you must complete and return the following,

If you are notified that your position will not be held and you wish to continue your elected benefits, you must contact the Benefits Office to make the appropriate arrangements.

If this is a leave due to Pregnancy, it is important that you discuss this policy with your Human Resource Officer.
