PAID FAMILY LEAVE

 

Paid Family Leave (PFL) is a component of the Claremont Colleges’ Voluntary Plan.  This program is designed to provide partial payment for up to six (6) weeks during a 12-month period1 for qualifying employees if one of the following situations:

 

BONDING:

 

 

For bonding purposes PFL must be taken concurrently.

 

ILLNESS:

 

 

For an illness employee’s can request to take PFL on an intermittent basis if the care to be rendered to a family member is provided in intervals, or if the medical condition affecting a family member is recurrent.

 

Employee’s cannot request to be placed on a PFL if another family member is ready, willing, able, and available to provide care to the ill or injured family member.  Employees will be required to sign an affidavit.

 

ELIGIBILITY:

 

All employees covered under the Colleges’ VDI program.  Please refer to your VDI handbook for additional information.

 

BENEFITS:

 

PFL benefits are based on past quarterly earnings and range from a minimum of $50 to $882 per week. 

 

POLICY:

 

Employees’ of the Claremont Colleges will need to satisfy a seven (7) day waiting period and must use accrued vacation hours during this period.  Following the fulfillment of the waiting period, an employee is entitled to six (6) weeks3 of PFL, once a valid claim has been submitted.

 

Employees’ will not be able to supplement the PFL benefit and will be responsible for making payments for any elected benefits they may have with the Colleges’.

 

PFL does not provide job protection or return rights.  Your job may be protected if you qualify for the federal Family Medical Leave Act and the California Family Rights Act. 

 

EMPLOYEE OBLIGATION:

 

If a leave is requested you must contact your Human Resource Office and notify them for your reason for taking a PFL in the manner consistent with your employers leave policy.

 

If your leave is for bonding with a child following birth, adoption, placement for adoption or foster care placement you must provide the following documentation:

 

 

If a leave is requested for a family member’s illness you will need to provide the following documentation:

 

 

Employees wishing to file a claim for PFL benefits or requesting information regarding your campus leave policy must contact their Human Resource Office.

1 A twelve-month period is defined as 365 consecutive days beginning with the first day from which the employee first establishes a valid claim for PFL benefits.

2 Domestic partners must be registered with the Secretary of State and who satisfy the requirements of Section 297 of the California Family Code.

3 A week is defined as seven consecutive days.
