WARNING UPDATE

07/25/07 11:30 am

After a few months of working with Landlords to identify the "Advanced Fee/Fraud Scam" I have a few new tips in fielding potential tenants:

1. All of the fraudulent inquiries were by email.  If you suspect the inquiry to be that of a scam artist, try to get this person to contact you by phone.

2.  All of the people making fraudulent inquires stated that they were a student at "The Claremont College".  Claremont College is not a college.  The scam artists are getting that information from our webpage, because the heading of our referral page reads "Claremont Colleges".  There are 7 members of The Claremont Colleges, try to get this person to identify exactly which College he/she will be attending.  Even more, try to get this person to identify which department they will be studying in, since most of the students using our webpage to find rentals are graduate students and have a specific course of study.

3. All of the fraudulent inquiries had typos with vital information that they should know how to spell, such as the name of their country, their town, and the college they are currently attending.

4. All of the people making fraudulent inquiries are willing to rent "sight unseen". They seem to have no interest in any of the details of the rental.

Please pay close attention and carefully screen potential tenants.  As mentioned before, you may contact our office if you have any doubts and we will try our best to address your concerns.

Thanks!!

WARNING!!!

Landlords, please be advised that there is a scam in the works. People posing as international students of The Claremont Colleges wanting to rent your room/apartment/condo/home.  This scam has been called the "Advanced Fee Fraud/Scam". The scam artist states that he/she will wire you the Security Deposit and Rent as well as several hundred dollars more, and asks that you give them cash back since they do not have a U.S. bank account yet. Here are a few suggestions from our office:

...Never give out your bank account number or financial information to a tenant.

...Never accept more money than is required up front and advance the change to the tenant.

...If you are ever unsure of a potential tenant, please call to verify if he/she is a student at The Claremont Colleges - (909) 607-2609.

...If you are unsure of the form of payment a tenant wishes to give you, please request a cashier's check, certified check or money order instead.

...If an international student wishes to rent from you and asks for help with getting a bank account or for financial help you may refer them to International Place at The Claremont Colleges:

International Place of The Claremont Colleges
