Mission Statement
The mission of the Queer Resource Center of the five Claremont Colleges is to empower each lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning person to have a positive college experience, grow as a self-aware individual and be a responsible community member. The QRC does this through:
The QRC’s Physical Space,
- Providing a visible, comfortable and accessible space for queer, questioning and allied members of the college community to congregate and explore issues of identity. In this space is a well-organized, diverse collection of books, movies and publications pertaining to queer issues.
Quality Programming,
- Consistently providing high-quality and well-advertised educational, social and activist programming which reflects the diversity within the queer community.
- Raising awareness of and encouraging critical introspection around issues affecting queer people, which include educating the college community about transgender issues. In addition, the QRC is dedicated to helping change college policies that are unfriendly to queer people.
- Understanding the importance of allies and working toward educating them and including them in QRC programming.
Strong Relationships,
- Building and maintaining strong coalitions with on-campus communities at all seven colleges, other student organizations, faculty, staff and alumni.
- Understanding the importance of and taking active steps to maintain a positive public image.
- Being a bridge to the neighboring communities by building relationships with outside organizations, being a resource to local community members and providing opportunities for students to connect with off-campus.
Encouraging Personal Growth,
- Empowering individuals to be proactive, responsible, and respected student leaders.
- Pushing for queer academia including, but not limited to, a queer studies program, intellectual forums and a database of classes with queer content.
- Encouraging and providing opportunities for community service.
Safety,
- Responding quickly and effectively to hate crimes and biased-related incidents.
and History.
- Keeping a record of queer history at the Claremont Colleges.
In working towards these goals, the QRC recognizes and actively addresses the diversity within the queer community. This includes, but is not limited to, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, sex, class, religion and ability.
