Meet the Coordinator
Welcome to the Queer Resource Center!
-Josh Nelson, Coordinator
Whether you are LGBT, a straight ally, a math major, an activist, an athlete, a dancer, from a big city or a small town, the QRC has something to offer you: Our space houses a great collection of LGBT-related books which can be checked out and used as textbooks for classes or research material for papers; We have a wide selection of queer movies that can be rented for free; The QRC’s student staff members put on a number of fantastic programs throughout the year in addition to co-sponsoring many others with various organizations; Our lounge and lobby can be used for organizational meetings, doing homework, practicing piano, playing foosball, or simply hanging out with good friends in a safe space.
In addition to the student staff members, I am at the QRC from 3:00—5:00pm each weekday. As a recent graduate of Pomona College, I understand the campus climate for LGBT students at the five colleges and am available and eager to meet with students, formally or informally. Some of the services I can offer are:
- Informal counseling related to LGBT issues, including coming out to friends and family and dealing with homophobia, both external and internal
- Acting as a liaison with faculty to improve students’ academic experiences
- Acting as a liaison with the administration to help give students a voice in policy matters
- Connecting students to local organizations for work or volunteer opportunities
- Connecting students to alumni in a particular field or profession
Outside of the formal setting, I have been known to host queer Dance, Dance Revolution parties, gay men’s meetings, Thanksgiving dinners and open forums at my on-campus apartment.
If you have any questions about queer life at the Claremont Colleges or the Queer Resource Center, please don’t hesitate to stop by the QRC or contact me.
