Telephone User Guide
The Claremont Colleges own a private telephone system known as NEC 2400. This User's Guide will explain how to use the features of this system. Not all telephones on campus have all of the features described in this guide. If you encounter any problems in using your telephone, please dial the campus telephone office at extension 18297.
Features are assigned to each station on the basis of individual calling requirements. To determine the level of service on an extension, from that extension dial "0" to reach the campus operator. The campus operator can tell you the level of service on the extension you are calling from.

Switchhook Flash
You must have dial tone before you can place any call or request any special feature. When you are engaged in a conversation, however, you must obtain a new dial tone before attempting to perform another function, such as call transfer. A new or second dial tone may be obtained by "flashing" the switch hook plunger which is located in the cradle that holds your telephone handset. On a D-Term instrument, press the TRF key.
Keep in mind as you go through this guide, you must have a dial tone in order to place a call or use a feature. If dial tone is not present, "flash" the switch hook to receive your dial tone. On D-Term instrument, press the TRF key. If you hear an error tone (fast busy) after attempting a feature, it could mean one of the following:
Start over (in the case of an error), or follow another course of action to complete your call. The "flash" is a preparatory step which may be used to correct an error in dialing and to request another special feature.
Intercampus Calls
Calls within The Claremont Colleges may be placed by dialing the five-digit number as listed in the Colleges' telephone directory.
Direct Inward Dialed Calls
All stations are capable of receiving calls dialed directly from outside the NEC 2400 system without operator assistance.

Selected telephones are capable of dialing long distance calls directly. If your telephone permits this dial, your call will be registered on automatic equipment in order to insure accurate telephone company billing.
Transfer Calls
You may transfer a call to another campus extension using the call transfer features.
Note: If the called extension is busy or does not answer, depress the switch hook once and the call is reconnected to your phone. On D-Term instrument, press TRF key again.
Consultation Hold
This feature enables you, while already engaged in a conversation with an outside party, to privately confer with another extension without the outside party hearing the conversation.
Conference Call (3-Way)
This feature enables you, while already engaged in a telephone conversation, to transfer in one additional number without the assistance of the campus operator.
If the called extension is busy or does not answer, depress the switch hook once and the outside party will be reconnected to your phone. If you are calling from a D-term, you can return to the original caller by pressing the button associated with the extension the second party is on. The extension which initiated the call must stay connected or all three parties will be disconnected.
Conference Call Using D-Term Instrument
To return to one call after terminating the other:
Call Pick-Up
This feature will enable you to answer a call directed to an unattended phone in your department. When an unattended phone in your call pick-up group is ringing:
Note: If you are engaged in a conversation, before you can answer another call, perform AUTOMATIC HOLD feature.
Call Forwarding All Calls
This feature enables you to forward all calls dialed to your extension to any other extension within the Colleges. Outgoing calls can not be dialed from an extension forwarded in this manner.
Note: The call forwarding feature can only be canceled from the telephone which activated the feature.
To Cancel Call Forwarding
Note: The call forwarding feature can only be canceled from the telephone which first activated the feature.
Camp On/Call Back
If you hear a busy signal and wish to be connected to the extension as soon as it is free, DO NOT HANG UP, but do the following:
When the called extension is free (and your extension is free), both extensions will be rung, and upon answering by both parties, a connection is established.
If you are using a D-term phone, press the "Call Back" button. The red light above that button will come on and you will briefly see "CB SET" in the display field. When the dialed extension is available, your phone will ring. To cancel the call back feature prior to the dialed extension becoming available, press the "Call Back" button a second time. The red light will go out and you will briefly see "CB CNCL" in the display field.
Call Waiting (Camped-On)
This feature enables you to automatically hold a call in progress and answer a second call dialed to your extension.
When you hear a short beep tone indicating that you have a second call coming in:
Note: After you have completed the second call, depress the switchhook once and dial "*0," and you'll be reconnected to the first call.
