Pitzer BSU Organizational Statement
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are we ready for this change? Not only
are we ready for this change, but in many respects,
we have initiated it. 1993 was the year in which several
students got together and decided that change was
necessary in order for their needs as Pitzer students
of African descent to be met.
They thus formed the Pitzer Black Student Union. The
mission was to create opportunities and outreach to
communities of African-American students. This year,
after a few years of inactivity, new students were
inspired to reactivate the Black Student Union. Our
commitment is to creating, promoting and maintaining
both an educational environment and a comfortable
social environment at Pitzer.
During the past year there have been many activities
that the Pitzer Black Student Union has organized
as well as participated in, with these goals in mind.
One of the first events was the high school student
over-nighter. Students from several Los Angeles high
schools were brought out for the weekend to talk with
students, professors and staff about the opportunities
that are available here at The Claremont Colleges
and issues that face the African American college
student. The inevitable goal is to promote more ethnic
diversity on these campuses.
Throughout the course of the year, other
activities have been held that include a Black History
Month film series, study breaks, poetry readings,
co-sponsorship of the Chicano/Latino over-nighter,
assistance with the IDBS Sojourner Truth Lecture and
Carribean literature conference, co-sponsorship of
the Pan African Student
