NATIONAL COLLEGE HEALTH ASSESSMENT Every two years, Health Education Outreach (HEO) administers the National College Health Assessment (NCHA) in collaboration with the American College Health Association (ACHA). The survey is administered online to all undergraduate students at the Claremont Colleges, asking students about every aspect of their health from drug use to sexual activities. The information determined through the NCHA, allows HEO, Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services (MCAPS), and Student Health Services (SHS) to identify the health behaviors, beliefs and perceptions that are most prevalent at the Claremont Colleges. In this way HEO and our affiliated student health organizations can develop programming and offer services that are tailored to the needs of the students of the Claremont Colleges. Additionally, the NCHA allows HEO to determine trends in student health problems, so we can evaluate whether programming is effective in alleviating problems. For more information on the NCHA, its administration, and its results, contact Jennifer Mares at 909-607-3602. SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE PREVALENCE HEO is currently engaged in a one year study during the 2008-2009 school year of the sexually transmitted disease prevalence at the Claremont Colleges. Through free testing services, HEO facilitates student testing for HIV, Chlamydia, and Gonorrhea. Coupled with these tests is optional participation in the sexually transmitted disease study. Students fill out a short survey about their sexual health practices in conjunction with their testing, and their survey answers are anonymously connected to their test results. Once all data has been collected, survey results on the sexual health practices of those tested will be placed in the context of the NCHA assessment results from Spring 2008 to statistically control the data to provide a representative sample of Claremont Colleges students overall. Through this study, HEO hopes to determine a statistically accurate figure of sexually transmitted disease prevalence at the Claremont Colleges. In this way, HEO can better develop programming to educate students about the true risks posed to them and ways that they can remain safe and health in their sexual health practices.
