Health Education Outreach Monthly Events and Announcements

We hope you have a fun, relaxing, and health-enhancing summer! Next year, we will be moving to the new Student Services Center, which is the construction that you may have noticed just south of Honnold Library. In addition to our new office, we will have many new and exciting programs to offer. Don’t worry, we’ll still have all of your old favorites as well, such as free condoms and HIV testing. Come and check us out when you return to campus. If you’re a senior, then be sure to stop by next time you’re in Claremont.

There’s still time to complete the NCHA. The last day to complete the survey will be May 5th. Check your campus email box for the email invitation to the survey. Once you’re finished, you can print out the “thank you” page, write your name on it, and bring it to HEO or to your Dean of Students office. You’ll be entered to win a Sony PSP (Play Station Portable). Thanks in advance for your participation!

This Month’s Health Highlight: Summer Workouts
Summer is a perfect time to start a new workout routine. Once your summer work, school, or play schedule is set, set aside some time in the morning or right after work for exercise. You could walk, run, swim, lift weights, or take group exercise classes. Here are some great websites to get you started and keep you motivated:
http://www.justmove.org -- good general exercise website
http://www.coolrunning.com -- good running based website
http://www.presidentschallenge.org - regardless of your political leanings, this website has some good tools and information
http://win.niddk.nih.gov/publications/active.htm#top - great exercise tips for people of all sizes
http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/physical/index.htm -- lots of info on physical activity and links to many sites

Nutrition
It has finally arrived! The new version of the USDA’s Food Pyramid has hit the web. Check it out at www.mypyramid.gov . If you find it confusing, never fear, we’ll help you decipher it during our nutrition programs next fall.

Sexual Health
It’s back. The contraceptive sponge will hit the market again this summer after a 10 year hiatus. Its relatively low price and high rate of pregnancy prevention make it a welcome contraceptive choice. It won’t protect against STDs, though. Read all about it at:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_24281.html

A new study finds that a high percentage of young gay and bisexual men who are HIV positive don’t know they have HIV. Read all about it at:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_24310.html

Alcohol and Other Drugs
A truly sobering statistic. A new study shows that drinking and driving among college students is on the rise and accounts for about 1700 deaths (in college students) each year. Additionally, it is estimated that 600,000 college students are injured each year as a direct result of alcohol use. Read it yourself at:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_24152.html

Other Health News
Ever wonder why you feel crummy after a long airline flight? Perhaps its oxygen deprivation. A recent study showed that over half of airline passengers’ blood oxygen levels fell an average of 4%, which some doctors say is enough to warrant supplemental oxygen. Find out more at:
