Faculty/Staff Assistance The Student in Crisis: Faculty members are often the first to have contact with a distressed student. Students can present with a range of symptoms from mild distress to acute psychotic symptoms. It is essential to the Counseling Center that faculty and staff feel they can consult with counseling center staff when uncertain how to handle a student in any distress. In the case of mild to moderate distress, it may be recommended that students call the receptionist to make an appointment with a Center psychologist. Appointments should be scheduled within one week. The psychologists and psychiatrists of the Center have extensive experience handling these situations and are prepared to accept calls for crisis management both during normal hours at 621-8202 and after hours by calling campus security at 607-2000. At all times there is a psychologist assigned to handle crisis or emergency calls. Safety must be the fundamental concern of our decisions. If a faculty member feels at any time that a student is a danger to him or herself, or is a danger to anyone else, Campus Safety should be notified immediately, and the Center staff can assist in the safe handling of these rare and difficult situations. Though there are limits to what the clinical staff at our center can
discuss with you, if you obtain information pertaining to the safety of
a student, feel free to inform the Center staff for a consultation.
