John F. Beckman

Dr. John F. Beckman was appointed the first Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Claremont University Consortium, September 1, 2001. He is responsible for providing leadership in managing the day-to-day operations of a key group of student and administrative support services provided by CUC. The CAO combines significant line management responsibilities for thirteen services with extensive coordination responsibilities both within the Consortium and between Consortium services and the individual colleges, intercollegiate committees, and the CEO of the Consortium. Dr. Beckman serves as a member of the senior management team reporting to the CEO.
 
Dr. Beckman’s professional background and education has prepared him well for the CAO position. He has a 30-year career in higher education covering a broad range of experiences in administration and strategic planning, academic program management including postgraduate and continuing education, student affairs and institutional research. He earned his Ed.D. from the University of Southern California in higher education with an emphasis in counseling psychology and organizational development.
 
Dr. Beckman has been a member of the senior administrative staff and faculty of Southern California University of Health Sciences (formerly Los Angeles College of Chiropractic) since 1980. His most recent position was Vice President for Administration and Planning/Chief Operations Officer. He has published in professional journals on subjects ranging from quality and organizational health to a wellness model of health care. Prior to 1980 Dr. Beckman served in progressively more responsible student affairs positions at California State University, Bakersfield. His last position there was Associate Dean, Student Life, Housing and Health Services.
 
Professionally, Dr. Beckman has been active beyond CUC, having served as an institutional evaluator and member of special working committees for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. He has also been a member of numerous professional organizations including the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), American Association of Higher Education (AAHE), California Association for Institutional Research (CAIR) and the National Association College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). Dr. Beckman also has the distinction of being appointed “Examiner” on the 1999 Board of Examiners of the California Governor’s Quality Awards, an organization dedicated to the application of the Baldridge criteria for quality management in California corporations.
