In the studio/classroom, professional artists provide instruction to developmentally disabled adults in drawing, painting, ceramics, and printmaking. Free Arts for Abused Children (FAAC) is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the healing power of creative art activities to young victims of child abuse and neglect in the dependency court systems. Volunteers provide daily activities including art, music and creative play while the children are awaiting their appearance in court. Many individuals use the program as internship fieldwork. The Public Corporation for the Arts (PCA) is a private, non-profit arts organization that supports the development of arts and culture in the greater Long Beach area. PCA is currently seeking a summer intern to assist with the planning and implementation of programming and publications for "October Is Arts Month", Long Beach's annual city-wide celebration of the arts, programming for the City's new East Village Arts District and related projects. The intern will also assist with artists services for the local arts community and the research necessary to update and maintain the PCA's visual artist database. The internship is intended for members of groups underrepresented in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, particularly individuals of African-American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American and Pacific islander descent. The intern must be a currently enrolled undergraduate and have completed at least one semester of college by June and not graduating before December. The intern must be a resident of and/or attending college in the Los Angeles area. The length of the internship is 10 weeks, beginning no later that June 23. The salary is $300/week full-time. The application deadline is May 16.

The mission of Youth First, the preeminent Artist-In-Residence program of Theatre of Hearts, is to prevent and intervene in youth

The Export Small Business Development Center is a non-profit organization that forms a unique partnership between the public and private sectors represented by the Small Business Administration, the State of California Trade Commerce Agency and the Export Managers Association of California. The Center's charter is to assist small to mid-sized companies increase their imports through a carefully orchestrated plan combining consultants, hands on training programs and access to vital international trade information. They currently have two, 2-3 days per week, 8 hour per day non-paid internships available for fall, spring and summer. The responsibilities of the internship position would be to assist in-house counselors with the dissemination of international trade resources to clients and to answer initial international trade related questions from clients. Students would interact with various internationally oriented associations and organizations and work closely with staff to monitor and update client files. The Volunteer Bureau implements City volunteer programs that empower City departments to enhance their goals through volunteerism to better serve the people of Los Angeles. City volunteers represent all geographic and ethnic areas and include professionals, students and retired senior citizens. Volunteer Opportunities include caring for animals through the Department of Animal Regulation, reading stories to children for the City Library, mediation for the City Attorney's Office, responding to emergency calls to support survivors of disasters for the Fire Department and the Police Department and serving as a camp counselor or sport coach for the Recreation and Parks Department.

These volunteer positions provide valuable experience for students pursuing a career in teaching, counseling and social work. Majors in Psychology, Math, English or Social Science are helpful. Project Sister is seeking volunteers (ages 18 & over) to serve as Rape Crisis Counselors, providing crisis hotline counseling and accompaniment to rape survivors at local hospitals, interviews with law enforcement and court hearings/trials. Applicants must be willing to agree to complete a minimum of 40 hours of training at the fall or spring Volunteer Advocate training's, serve on the hotline at least 18 hours per month for a minimum of one year, and attend a minimum of 5 hours of on-going in-service training's held at
Project Sister. After completion of the 40-hour training and successful completion of 36 hours of crisis hotline counseling and accompaniment, candidates are given a Rape Counselor Certification. All candidates must have a car for their transportation to local hospitals for rape survivor accompaniment and a telephone in residence which can be used for crisis hotline calls to be received to facilitate the required 18 hours per month of crisis hotline counseling and crisis response.

YWCA-WINGS program for battered women and their children has been serving the community since 1978. WINGS provide a 30-day emergency shelter for women and their children as well as a Community Outreach Program. Volunteers and Interns are expected to a volunteer advocate training of 28 hours in the classroom, as well as 12 hours hands on in the program of their choice and the 24-hour helpline.
